CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) - SMU and Georgia Tech swept the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball weekly honors, with four student-athletes recognized for their standout performances from August 25–31. SMU’s graduate opposite hitter Malaya Jones was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Averi Carlson, a senior, earned ACC Setter of the Week. Georgia Tech senior libero Sofia Velez claimed ACC Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Lameen “Mimi” Mambu rounded out the honors as ACC Freshman of the Week.
ACC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Malaya Jones, Gr., Opposite Hitter, SMU (El Dorado Hill, California)
- Averaged 4.40 kills and 4.85 points per set in the Mustangs’ opening weekend.
- Totaled 44 kills, 24 digs and seven blocks over the weekend.
- First Mustang since 2019 to have consecutive 20+ kill matches in the wins over LSU and No. 20 Baylor.
- Recorded a double-double against Baylor with 24 kills and 16 digs.
ACC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sofia Velez, Fr., Libero/DS, Georgia Tech (Tulua, Colombia)
- Averaged 5.82 digs per set with 64 total digs in Georgia Tech’s opening weekend.
- Added 11 assists and three service aces across three wins.
ACC SETTER OF THE WEEK
Averi Carlson, Sr., Setter, SMU (Lucas, Texas)
- Recorded 104 assists with an average of 10.40 assists per set.
- Logged back-to-back matches with 50+ assists, marking the first time for a Mustang to do so since 2019.
- Helped defeat No. 20 Baylor with three kills, 14 digs and a career-high five blocks.
ACC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Lameen "Mimi" Mambu, Fr., Outside Hitter, Georgia Tech (Chantilly, Virginia)
- Recorded 40 kills, an average of 3.64 kills per set, and nine service aces in the Yellow Jackets’ opening weekend.
- Recorded 42 digs, averaging 3.82 digs per set.
- Notched three consecutive double-double performances.
