CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference showed off its depth as four lower seeds advanced through the first round of the 2026 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship on Wednesday at campus sites. All seven matches were determined by one goal or via penalty kicks during a chaotic day of action. Four matches went to penalties, setting a tournament record for one day.
ACC Network will broadcast all four quarterfinal matches on Sunday, beginning at Noon ET with No. 7 seed North Carolina traveling to No. 2 Clemson. No. 11 NC State travels to No. 3 Wake Forest at 2 p.m. ET. After earning a first-round bye, No. 1 seed SMU plays host to No. 9 Virginia at 4 p.m. ET, followed by No. 13 seed Syracuse at No. 12 seed Stanford at 6 p.m. ET.
No. 13 seed Syracuse matched the lowest seed in tournament history to advance, joining Pitt in 2025, as the Orange outlasted No. 4 Pitt, 7-6, in penalties following a 1-1 draw. The Orange will head west to play No. 12 Stanford, which scored a 2-1 triumph at No. 5 seed Louisville to land a home quarterfinal game in Palo Alto, California. This is the second straight year in which the 12-seed will play the 13-seed in a quarterfinal.
No. 9 seed Virginia also went on the road and advanced via penalties, ousting No. 8 Notre Dame, 5-4, in the shootout after a 2-2 draw. The Cavaliers play at SMU on Sunday in a rematch of the title game of the 2025 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship, won 1-0 by the Mustangs.
No. 11 seed NC State scored a pair of second-half goals to rally and win at No. 6 Virginia Tech, 2-1. The Wolfpack advanced to play No. 3 Wake Forest, which scored in the 89th minute to force extra time before downing No. 14 Boston College, 6-5, in the penalty-kick shootout.
No. 7 North Carolina also staged a late rally, scoring in the 83rd minute to send the match to overtime before prevailing, 4-3, in penalties against No. 10 California. The Tar Heels next play No. 2 Clemson, which knocked off No. 15 Duke, 2-1, in a monsoon in Clemson, South Carolina.
The semifinals will be played Thursday, November 12, at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, with the matches airing on ACC Network at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. ET. The championship match will be broadcast on ESPNU on Sunday, November 15, at 4 p.m. ET.
