Wake Forest Advances With 95-89 Overtime Win Over Virginia Tech

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) — Wake Forest took control in overtime and pulled away for a 95-89 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday night in the 2026 T. Rowe Price ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Spectrum Center. 

Myles Colvin led the Demon Deacons with 18 points and six rebounds, Sebastian Akins added 14 points, while Mekhi Mason and Tre’Von Spillers each poured in 13.  

Ben Hammond was the Hokies leading scorer with a game-high 23 points, followed by Jailen Bedford with 17 and Jaden Schutt with 15. 

The Demon Deacons (17-15) outscored the Hokies 20-14 in the extra period, hitting 5-of-7 shots and all nine of their free throws in overtime to secure the victory. 

Wake led 38-34 at halftime, but Virginia Tech responded with 41 points in the second half to force overtime. The final 20 minutes featured multiple lead changes and ties, with the Hokies’ largest advantage reaching five points. 

Wake shot 51% from the field (30-of-59) and 90% from the free-throw line (27-of-30). Virginia Tech finished at 41% (29-of-70) and converted 23 of 27 from the stripe. The Hokies went 8-of-24 from 3-point range, while Wake hit 8-of-22 from beyond the arc. 

Wake controlled most of the overtime period and built a six-point cushion late to seal the win.  

Of Note 

  • Wake Forest became just the second team in ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament history to have seven players score in double figures, joining the 2007 Demon Deacons in a double-overtime affair with Georgia Tech.  

  • Tuesday’s nightcap was the first overtime contest of the 2026 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament. It marked the eighth all-time overtime game in the tournament’s first round.  

  • Wake Forest improves to 7-7 all-time in ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament overtime games. Virginia Tech moves to 2-3 in overtime games in the tournament. 

  • Virginia Tech outrebounded Wake Forest 45-28 on Tuesday.  

  • The Demon Deacons shot 90 percent (27-of-30) from the charity stripe. 

  • The box scores were eerily similar in the contest. Both teams made eight 3-pointers, had 40 points in the paint and scored seven fast break points, while assists were separated by just one (15-14) in favor of Wake Forest.
