Louisville’s Kipruto Claims NCAA Men’s Steeplechase National Title

EUGENE, Ore. (theACC.com) – Louisville sophomore Elsingi Kipruto won the gold medal in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday, June 12, at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The Mosoriot, Kenya, native crossed the finish line in 8:17.46, capping a phenomenal year on the track. Earlier this spring, Kipruto broke the ACC record in the steeplechase with a time of 8:08.10. He also won the 5,000-meter ACC championship on his home track in Louisville, Kentucky, with a time of 13:23.34.

Kipruto became the first student-athlete from a current ACC school to win the NCAA men’s steeplechase title since Stanford’s Steven Fahy in 2019. He also became the first Louisville athlete to win the event since Edwin Kibichiy in 2017.

The gold medal-winning performance helped the Cardinals earn a seventh-place finish at the national meet to lead all ACC teams. Louisville’s seventh-place finish is tied for the best finish in program history at the NCAA Championships. Louisville (32 points) was followed by Virginia (tied for 19th, 13 points) and Wake Forest (tied for 30th, 8 points).

Entering the final day of competition on the women’s side, both Clemson and Stanford are in the top 10 of the team standings. Field events will begin Saturday, June 13, with the women’s discus at 2:30 p.m. ET, while the women’s 4x100-meter relay begins at 8:02 p.m. ET. Combined events will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
