Charlottesville, Va. (bceagles.com) – Redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown threw for a career-high three touchdowns and junior tight end Tommy Sweeney scored a career-high two touchdowns as Boston College (4-4, 2-3 ACC) defeated ACC rival Virginia (5-2, 2-1), 41-10, in Charlottesville on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles scored on their first four possessions (field goal, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown) for 24 points and 331 yards of total offense in the first half. A 76-yard scoring run by junior wide receiver Thadd Smith and a 76-yard reception by redshirt freshman wide receiver Kobay White marked the longest scoring plays of the season.
The Eagles improved to 6-0 all-time against the Cavaliers and earned their second consecutive ACC win for the first time since 2014.
KEY MOMENT
BC took a commanding lead with 1:57 left to play in the first quarter when it increased its lead to 17-0 as Brown completed a 76-yard touchdown pass to White. The Eagles would lead the rest of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BC opened the scoring on its first drive of the game when junior kicker Colton Lichtenberg converted a 30-yard field goal at 6:51 in the first quarter to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. The 15 play scoring drive included a 15-yard run by Brown, a series of rushes by junior running back Jon Hilliman and freshman running back AJ Dillon and a 28-yard pass to junior tight end Tommy Sweeney to set the Eagles up at the Virginia 31-yard line.
- On the next drive for the Eagles, Brown threw a 10-yard pass to junior wide receiver Jeff Smith to give BC the ball at their own 24-yard line. Thadd Smith had a 76-yard touchdown run on the following play at 4:16 to make it 10-0.
- The Eagles increased their lead to 17-0 on their following drive when, after a series of rushes by Dillon, Brown completed a 76-yard touchdown pass to White with 1:57 left in the quarter.
- BC increased its lead to 24-0 with its fourth straight scoring drive at 11:35 in the second quarter when Brown threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Sweeney. Back-to-back passes from Brown to junior wide receiver Michael Walker set the Eagles up at the Virginia 20-yard line and Dillon carried the ball to the nine-yard line.
- With 42 seconds remaining in the first half, Virginia finished a 14-play, 59-yard scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Joe Reed to make it 24-7.
- In the beginning of the second half, Brown completed a 14-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Chris Garrison, which was followed by an 11-yard rush by Dillon and a seven-yard rush by Brown to the Virginia 35-yard line. The Eagles went for it on fourth-and-two and converted on a 14-yard pass from Brown to Sweeney. A 36-yard field goal by Lichtenberg at 10:42 increased BC's lead to 27-7.
- Brown completed a 29-yard pass to Hilliman to give the Eagles the ball at the Virginia 35-yard line. BC converted on fourth and one when Dillon rushed for 15 yards to the 11-yard line. A three-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Sweeney made it 34-7 with 2:11 left in the third quarter.
- Cavaliers kicker A.J. Mejia converted a 38-yard field goal at 14:53 in the fourth quarter to finish off a nine-play, 55-yard scoring drive for Virginia.
- Redshirt freshman linebacker John Lamot intercepted quarterback Lindell Stone's pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown at 9:30, increasing the Eagles' lead to 41-10.

The Eagles return to action in Chestnut Hill at Alumni Stadium against Florida State on Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. ESPN will televise the game live. Virginia will head to Pittsburgh for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff on Oct 28.
