2016 All-ACC Academic Men’s Soccer Team Announced

Wake Forest’s Jacori Hayes Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest senior midfielder Jacori Hayes has been named the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the sport’s All-ACC Academic team, as announced Tuesday by Commissioner John Swofford.

A physics major with minors in environmental science and mathematics, Hayes helped lead the Demon Deacons to the ACC Championship and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Championship. He was named to the All-ACC First Team, NSCAA All-America First Team, NSCAA Scholar All-America First Team,  and won the Senior CLASS Award. A semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, Hayes was selected 18th overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

The selection to the All-ACC Academic Team is the fourth in Hayes’ career, while teammate Ian Harkes and Notre Dame’s Evan Panken also were recognized for the fourth time. Louisville’s Tim Kubel, NC State’s Alex McCauley, and Syracuse’s Oyvind Alseth were included for a third time.

All 12 ACC men’s soccer programs had at least one player honored, led by North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Syracuse with five apiece.

Three players on the All-ACC Academic Team were also named All-Americans, while 15 garnered All-ACC accolades. The list includes Harkes, the winner of the MAC Hermann Trophy, North Carolina’s Alex Comsia, the winner of the NCAA Elite 90 Award, Notre Dame’s Jon Gallagher, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and North Carolina’s Cam Lindley, the ACC Freshman of the Year.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
