Conference record by FSU’s Knibb highlights top-five performances
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State grad student Kellion Knibb earned Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Field Performer of the Week accolades after a record performance in the discus and highlights a group of five conference Outdoor Track and Field weekly award honorees that each posted national top-five marks or times last weekend.
NC State distance runner Erika Kemp was named the ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week for the third time this season, while Virginia Tech’s Drew Piazza and Pitt’s Desmond Palmer shared Men’s Track Performer of the Week honors. Virginia’s Jordan Scott was tabbed as the ACC Field Performer of the Week.
Knibb felled a trio of records on her third discus attempt of the competition Saturday at Stanford’s Cardinal Classic. Unleashing a lifetime-best mark of 61.59 meters (202-1), Knibb broke her own Jamaican National, ACC and Florida State marks and solidified her position atop the NCAA Division I ranks in 2017. The three-time ACC discus champion and 2016 NCAA runner-up was locked in a duel with Valarie Allman, last year’s NCAA bronze medalist from Stanford, who was competing unattached. Knibb ultimately finished second in the competition as Allman posted the No. 4 mark in the world this year (64.69m) for the win. Knibb’s throw meets the qualifying standard for the 2017 IAAF World Championships, which will be contested August 4-13 in London. This season, Kemp has raced three times in three different events and won all three races, while setting personal bests in the 1,500m and 5,00m. The Mount Holly, New Jersey, redshirt junior also ranks top-10 in the NCAA in the 5,000m and 10,000m.
