2017 All-ACC Academic Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Team Announced

Virginia Tech’s Green recognized as sport’s ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech senior middle-distance runner Hanna Green has been recognized as the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Green took the silver medal in the women’s 800 meters at the NCAA Finals with a time of 2:01.32. Earlier, she had claimed gold medals in both the 800 and 1,500 meters at the ACC Championships, with her winning time of 2:01.28 setting a new meet record. Green won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:15.08 to secure her first ACC title in that event and help the Hokies clinch the conference title.

The Latrobe, Pennsylvania, native concluded her Virginia Tech career with six total ACC titles. Her regular-season accolades included a school-record time of 4:32.50 in the Olympic Development mile at the Penn Relays. When converted to 1,500 meters, her listed time of 4:12.31 set another program record.

In the classroom, Green achieved a 4.0 grade point average for the fifth consecutive semester while earning dean’s list honors. An interior design major, Green is eligible for her fourth selection to the ACC honor roll and was a member of the Virginia Tech’s 2016 All-Academic Team, which includes the top student-athlete academically in each varsity sport. Green also earned the ACC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and was Virginia Tech’s Women’s Scholar-Athlete for the 2016 academic year.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career.

Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.  Every student-athlete selected to the 2017 All-ACC Women’s Track and Field Academic Team earned All-America and/or All-ACC honors this past season, was selected as an ACC Performer of the Week or earned a spot in the 2017 NCAA finals.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.

Three members of the 2017 All-ACC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Academic Team were also named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans for the current academic year – North Carolina’s Sarah Howard (first team), Clemson’ Grace Barnett (third team) and Notre Dame’s Jessica Harris (third team).

Duke and Florida State lead all schools with 11 student-athletes named to this year’s All-ACC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Academic Team.
