Gallagher and Krapf Earn ACC Men’s Soccer Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Notre Dame’s Jon Gallagher has been named ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while NC State’s Leon Krapf was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.

Gallagher was the most outstanding player on the field in the opening conference game of the season for Notre Dame at Boston College on Friday, logging his first career collegiate hat trick across just over 30 minutes of game action in a 3-1 victory for the No. 6 Irish in Newton, Massachusetts. Gallagher’s hat trick was just the second by a Notre Dame player in ACC play (Brandon Aubrey against Virginia Tech on Sept. 9, 2016), and only the third overall by an Irish player since the 2012 season.

The senior forward from Dundalk, Ireland, opened the game’s scoring by burying a curling free kick from just over 20 yards in the 50th minute, and added the second on a leaping header in the 74th minute. Just after Boston College pulled within one goal at 2-1, the 2016 ACC Offensive Player of the Year hit nearly a carbon copy, bending strike free kick inside the right post to complete the hat trick. Gallagher led all players with six shot attempts on the night, including five on goal.

Krapf had a great weekend for NC State, playing all 180 minutes in wins over No. 3 Clemson and Longwood. He held the high powered Clemson offense to zero goals, stopping all five shots that came his way. He then allowed just one goal in the team’s next match, a Sunday win over Longwood. For the week, the freshman goalkeeper from Gochsheim, Germany, posted a .857 save percentage.
