Boston College Falls to Notre Dame, 49-20

– Boston College entered halftime trailing Notre Dame, 14-10, but the Irish out-scored the Eagles 35-10 in the second half to claim a 49-20 road win at Alumni Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd of 44,500.

Notre Dame (2-1) quarterback Brandon Wimbush rushed for 207 yards and four touchdowns and running back Josh Adams rushed for 229 yards to propel the Irish to the victory. 

BC graduate wide receiver Charlie Callinan had a career-high seven receptions for 82 yards with two touchdowns, while junior running back Jon Hilliman recorded his sixth-career 100-yard game as he rushed for 122 yards.

The Eagles (1-2, 0-1 ACC) had three turnovers in the second half, which the Irish turned into 21 points. 

Boston College returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Eagles travel to No. 3/2 Clemson for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Television details for the game will be announced on Sunday, but it will be broadcast on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
  • Callinan recorded career-highs in receptions (7), touchdowns (2), receiving yards (82) and all-purpose yards (82) 
  • Hilliman rushed for 122 yards. He recorded his sixth-career 100-yard game. The last time Hilliman ran for 100 yards was against Georgia Tech (Sept. 3, 2016). 
  • Senior linebacker Ty Schwab led the team with a career-high 10 tackles. 
  • Junior kicker Colton Lichtenberg remained perfect for the season, going 2-for-2, hitting a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter. He is now 6-for-6 in field goals on the year. 
  • Junior defensive back Lukas Denis recorded an interception at the end of the first half. It was the third interception of his career and second of the season. 

KEY MOMENT
  • With BC trailing by a single point at 14-13 with 7:40 left in the third quarter, the Eagles had the Irish with a third-and-10 at ND 45-yard line. Wimbush took the handoff and rushed for 46 yards, giving Notre Dame first-and-goal at the 9-yard line. Jones scored on a 1-yard rush to push the score to 21-13 before the Irish scored 14 more unanswered points to control the game. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Boston College struck first with 7:52 left in the first quarter when Lichtenberg converted a 38-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. A 10-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown to Callinan to set the Eagles up in scoring position.
  • On the following drive, Notre Dame answered with a 65-yard rush by Josh Adams. A 2-yard run by Wimbush gave the Irish a 10-3 lead with 6:28 left to play in the first quarter. 
  • The Eagles opened the scoring in the second half when Hilliman rushed for 29 yards to the ND 46-yard line. Hilliman had another 9-yard rush and an 8-yard reception by freshman running back Travis Levy set up the Eagles on the ND 27-yard line. Browns then connected with Callinan for a 22-yard TD reception with 11:59 left in the second to give BC a 10-7 lead.  
  • At the end of the first half, Adams rushed for 64-yards to the BC 17-yard line. Wimbush carried the ball into the endzone for a 1-yard touchdown rush as Notre Dame reclaimed the lead at 14-10 with 1:57 left to play in the half.
  • On Notre Dame's opening drive of the second half, Wimbush fumbled and BC junior linebacker Kevin Bletzer recovered to give the Eagles the ball at the Irish 32-yard line. Lichtenberg converted a 41-yard field goal at 11:25 to pull within one point at 14-13
  • Notre Dame responded with ar 46-yard run by Wimbush to set up the Irish at the BC 9-yard line. Tony Jones rushed for a 1-yard touchdown run to push the lead up to 21-10 with 5:04 minutes left in the quarter. 
  • An interception by Shaun Crawford gave the Irish the ball back at their own 40-yard line. Adams rushed for 36 yards and Wimbush converted a 33-yard pass to Durham Smythe to put Notre Dame at the BC 6-yard line. Wimbush rushed for a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:38 left in the third quarter to make it 28-13. 
  • On the Irish's opening drive of the fourth quarter, the Eagles had BC at third-and-7 and the ND35, but Wimbush scampered for a 65-yard touchdown run, increasing Notre Dame's lead to 35-13.
  • The Eagles answered back with 9:02 left in the fourth quarter when Brown converted a 14-yard touchdown pass to Callinan, cutting the Irish lead to 35-20. 
  • BC forced a three-and-out on ND's next drive, but as the Eagles were working out of their own end on their next possession, Hilliman fumbled at the BC33. The Irish took over at the 35-yard line and after Wimbush's 32-yard rush, Williams had a three-yard run into the endzone. 
  • Notre Dame intercepted Brown on the Eagles' next drive, setting up Williams' 15-yard TD run to cap the scoring at 49-20
