ACCDN VIDEO: Highlights | James Blackman TD Pass To Auden Tate Beats Wake Forest | FSU RB Jacques Patrick Carries Offense
Winston-Salem, N.C. (Seminoles.com) – For 58 minutes and 59 seconds, James Blackman and the Florida State passing attack looked out of sync, out of rhythm and out of sorts.
But with just 1:01 left on the clock, Blackman took a snap, rolled to his right and connected with Auden Tate for a 40-yard touchdown pass that might turn out to be the most important play of Florida State’s 2017 football season.
Blackman delivered a perfect throw, and Tate, in and out of the lineup while recovering from a shoulder injury, caught it in the end zone despite having a Wake Forest defender draped on his back.
Officials flagged the play for pass interference, but it didn’t matter. Tate scored and delivered the Seminoles a 26-19 victory over the Demon Deacons in front of 31,580 fans here at BB&T Field.
With its first win in the books, Florida State (1-2, 0-1) returns home next week, where it will look to get back into the ACC race and also win an eighth straight game against rival Miami.
Blackman completed 11 of 21 passes for 121 yards, nearly one-third of which came on his final pass.
Junior running back Jacques Patrick added 120 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, and sophomore kicker Ricky Aguayo made four field goals to push his made-kicks streak to eight.
FSU’s defense, meanwhile, forced its first two turnovers of the season – an interception and a fumble, both from Kyle Meyers – and held the Demon Deacons to just seven points in the second half.
