But Sorkin’s 6-1, 6-4 win over Sena Suswam put the match away.

Virginia Tech opened by taking the doubles point with 6-4 wins at the top two slots. Caroline Daxhelet and Natalie Novotna defeated Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg, while Kozar and Sorkin turned back Suswam nd Ariana Rodriguez.

The Hokies avenged a 4-3 regular-season loss to the Cardinals in Louisville on March 18.

The Panthers became the second lower seed to win in opening round, storming back after dropping the doubles points to down Boston College.

Callie Frey was also a straight-set winner on court No. 6, where she clipped Elene Tsokilauri by a 6-4, 6-4 score. Pitt’s Natsumi Okamato claimed the point on court No. 5 after the Eagles’ Maria Ross was forced to withdraw from the third set due to injury. Okamato led 3-0 in that final set when the match was called.
