ACC Announces Seeds, Lanes for 2018 Rowing Championship

Seeds, Lane Assignments Announced for ACC Rowing Championship

Defending ACC champion Virginia earned the top seed in all five events for of the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship, which will be held Sunday, May 13 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina.

The seeds area determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

The Cavaliers, ranked seventh nationally this week in the CRCA Coaches poll, are the favorite to capture their ninth consecutive ACC Rowing title and 18th in the 19 years of the event.

No. 20 Syracuse took the No. 2 seeds in the First Varsity Eight, the Second Varsity and Third Varsity Eight, while No. 19 Duke claimed the No. 2 seed in the First Varsity Four and the Second Varsity Four.

Virginia leads six ACC teams ranked or receiving votes for the CRCA Coaches poll
Virginia continues to lead all ACC teams in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association weekly standings as the Cavaliers moves up two spaces to No. 7 in the May 2 poll. Notre Dame moved up to 17th and was joined in the top 20 by Duke (No. 19) and Syracuse (No. 20). Louisville and Clemson were among those teams not ranked, but receiving votes
The ranking for Virginia marked the 148th time the Cavaliers have been in the CRCA Coaches poll and the 125th that UVA has been ranked in the Top 10. Virginia has been ranked for 112 consecutive weeks. Notre Dame’s ranking is its highest this year. The ranking for Duke marked the 28th time the Blue Devils have been in the CRCA poll, including 19 times over the last three years. Syracuse made its first appearance in the top 20 since April 11.

Syracuse’ Pearce Selected for Australia’s U23 Trials
Syracuse sophomore Lucy Pearce is one of 13 women selected for Australia’s U23 World Championships team becoming the second member of Syracuse’s varsity eight crew selected for her national team’s trial this year. Arianna Lee, who sits bow for the Orange, will head to the United States’ U23 Team trials for sculling and is one of four ACC student athletes invited to the USA trials. 

Pearce is in her second year and has been a staple on the varsity eight sitting primarily in the No. 3 seat since arriving in Syracuse. As a freshman, she helped the Orange secure their highest ranking (No. 12) in the US Rowing/CRCA Coaches’ Poll since 2012.

Boston College Rowers Selected for ACC Futures Internships
The two team captains for Boston College’s rowing team have been chosen to part of the ACC Futures Internship program. Claire Orzel and Laura Mazziotta were each selected for an internship that will help them prepare for their futures after college athletics. Orzell, a senior from Newark, Delaware, will be working with Fox Sports Florida in Orlando. Mazziotta, a senior from Bethesda, Maryland, will be headed to the ACC offices in Greensboro, where she will assist the conference’s championship division.

Rowing By-The-Numbers

The number of ACC Rowers who were awarded ACC Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships this year. Jacqueline McDonnell of Boston College and Kirsti Harrison of Louisville were each recipients of the $6,000 scholarships for their performing with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. McDonnell’s scholarship was the Thacker Award, which originated in 2005, in honor of the late Jim and Pat Thacker of Charlotte, North Carolina. Jim Thacker was the primary play-by-play announcer for the ACC’s first television network.

2 - Also the number of ranked teams Virginia Second Varsity Eight defeated in winning the Longhorn Invite last Saturday in Austin, Texas. The Cavaliers defeated No. 3 Texas and No. 8 Iowa in leading UVA to wins in four of the five events.

4 - Also the number of ACC rowers invited to the United State’s Under-23 National Team Selection camp. Invited are junior coxswain Izzi Weiss (Chicago, Illinois) and sophomore Isabella Strickler (Gross Pointe, Michigan) of Virginia; junior Shannon Tierney (Hackettstown, New Jersey) of Duke and junior Arianna Lee of Syracuse (Folsom, California). Also, Virginia junior Mackenzie King (Yardley, Pennsylvania) was named to the waitlist for the camp.

6 - Six of the ACC’s nine rowing teams are either ranked in this week’s CRCA Coaches top 20 or are among those receiving votes. Virginia is ranked seventh, Notre Dame is 17th, Duke is 19th and Syracuse is 20th. Louisville and Clemson are among the teams receiving votes in the poll.

6 - Also the number of consecutive weeks in which Boston College is competing this year. The Eagles concluded their tough stretch last week at the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts and will have this week off before competing at the ACC Championship.

16 -  When the ACC hosts its 19th Annual Rowing Championship on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina, it will mark the 16th time, and ninth consecutive year, that the championship has been held on the Clemson campus. 

112 - When Virginia was ranked seventh nationally on May 2 in the weekly Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, it marked the 112th consecutive week that the Cavaliers have been ranked in the nation’s Top 20.
