62 rowers named to All-ACC Academic Team from a record 286 nominees
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) — Notre Dame’s Treasa O’Tighearnaigh was named the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the 62-person All-ACC Academic Rowing Team announced Thursday.
O’Tighearnaigh, a senior from Powell, Ohio, who is majoring in Biological Sciences and Economics, rowed in the seven seat of Notre Dame’s First Varsity Eight crew, which placed fifth at the ACC Championships. A first-team All-ACC selection, she becomes the second Notre Dame rower to be named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Anna Kottkamp (2014 and 2015).
O’Tighearnaigh was also named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team and was a CRCA Scholar-Athlete selection this season for the third time in her career.
Louisville led all ACC schools with 10 selections to the All-ACC Academic Team, followed by Syracuse with nine and Virginia, North Carolina and Notre Dame with eight each. Miami and Boston College each had six selections, followed by Clemson and Duke with four apiece.
The team was selected from a pool of 286 nominees, the most in league history. The nine ACC schools that sponsor Rowing averaged 31.7 nominees each.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career.
Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team. The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
Sixteen of the 18 members of the 2018 All-ACC Rowing team were also named to the All-ACC Academic squad.
Notre Dame senior Reilly Kearney, coxswain for the Irish’s First Varsity Eight crew from San Mateo, California, was named to the All-ACC Academic team for the fourth time.
O’Tighearnaigh, Katherine Maitland of Duke, Kirsti Harrison, Callie McGowan and Sophie Schulz of Louisville, Taegan Lynch of Miami and Arianna Lee of Syracuse were each chosen to the team for the third time.
Additionally, 20 rowers were selected for the second time, including Elizabeth McKernan of Boston College; Jenny D’Anthony, Emily Goff and Amelia Shein of Clemson; Kiernan Spencer and Shannon Tierney of Duke; Rebecca Busk, Sarah Podwojski and Allison Zimmermann of Louisville; Alexa Aguilar of Miami; Paige Colpo, Kathryn Johnson, Jackie Kenny and Kelly Williams of North Carolina; Lauren Saunee of Notre Dame; Rachel Caldwell, Haley Jones and Rebecca Spraggins of Syracuse; and Jane Hudson and Heidi Long of Virginia.
