Duke's Alex Smalley Headlines 2018-19 All-ACC Academic Men's Golf Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Alex Smalley, the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, leads the 2018-19 All-ACC Academic Team as announced Wednesday. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is named after Rod Myers, Duke's men's golf coach from 1973-2007.

A senior studying environmental science, Smalley led Duke with a regular-season record 70.35 stroke average, while posting eight top-10 and six top-5 finishes in 12 tournaments this year. He earned PING All-Region honors for the fourth straight year and graduated as the Blue Devils’ career scoring leader with a 71.32 career average in 49 tournaments.

Smalley ranked No. 7 in the nation according to Golfstat and No. 20 according to Golfweek in the postseason rankings.

Ten golfers who earned All-ACC honors this season secured spots on the 2018-19 All-ACC Academic Men’s Golf Team: Clemson's Bryson Nimmer; Duke's Chandler Eaton, Adrien Pendaries and Smalley; Georgia Tech's Tyler Strafaci, NC State's Stephen Franken; Louisville’s Matthias Schmid; Virginia's Thomas Walsh; and Wake Forest's Eric Bae and Cameron Young.

Duke led all programs with five golfers on the academic team, while Louisville and Wake Forest had four each.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
