AUSTIN, Texas (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference men’s and women’s competitors combined for 10 podium finishes and 27 first-team All-America honors at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday evening.
In addition to an NCAA title run by Notre Dame sophomore Yared Nuguse in the men’s 1500, the four-day event included silver medals by the Florida State men’s 4x100 relay team, Virginia’s Jordan Scott (men’s triple jump), North Carolina’s Nicole Greene (women’s high jump) and Florida State’s Shanice Love (women’s discus).
Virginia’s Hilmar Jonsson (men’s hammer throw), Florida State’s Armani Wallace (men’s triple jump), Notre Dame’s Jessica Harris (women’s 1500), North Carolina’s Madison Wiltrout (women’s javelin) and Miami’s Michelle Atherley (women’s pentathlon) all claimed bronze medals.
The FSU men’s 4x100 relay team of freshmen Bryand Rincher and Jhevaughn Matherson and seniors Michael Timpson Jr. and Andre Ewers set an ACC record with their time of 38.08. The FSU women’s 4x100 relay team of Karimah Davis, Jayla Kirkland, Shauna Helps and Ka’Tia Seymour also set a new school and ACC standard with their seventh-place time of 43.13. Seymour’s time of 11.11 during the women’s 100-meter prelims set another ACC mark.
Florida State’s Love (62.69m in the discus) and Miami’s Atherley (6,014 points in the heptathlon) each fell just short of ACC records with their personal-best marks, and the time of 4:11.96 that Harris posted in the 1,500 was a season best.
Nuguse’s winning time of 3:41.48 in the men’s 1500 on Friday marked the 10th NCAA individual title by an ACC student-athlete during the current academic year. ACC teams have also won a combined six ACC team national titles during 2018-19.
