CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – The national polls ranked the Notre Dame men and NC State women as tops among Atlantic Coast Conference teams, and both lived up to their billing with first-place showings at the 2020 ACC Cross Country Championships.
The Fighting Irish placed three runners among the top seven on Friday at the WakeMed Soccer Park course to claim their second title in three years. The host NC State women also had three of the top seven finishers and took home the conference championship trophy for the fifth straight year and record 26th time overall.
Notre Dame senior Yared Nuguse led his team’s victory with an 8K gold medal time of 23:03.6. Nuguse, whose collegiate resume includes an outdoor track national championship and multiple All-America honors, claimed the bronze medal at the 2018 ACC Men’s Cross Country Championship and was the runner-up last year.
NC State senior Dominique Clairmonte, whose blazing 5K time during the regular season on this same course netted National Athlete of the Week honors from the USTFCCCA, followed suit on Friday with a 6K time of 19:55.1 that led the field by 11 seconds.

The ACC Men’s Championship continued a recent strong run by coach Sean Carlson’s Fighting Irish, who captured their first conference title two years ago in Boston. In addition to Nuguse’s first-place showing, Notre Dame was buoyed by a bronze medal finish from sophomore Dylan Jacobs (23:12.7) and a seventh-place showing by senior Danny Kilrea (23:27.4). Freshman Josh Methner placed 11th at 23:30.1.
Following up on his bronze medal finish last year, NC State’s Ian Shanklin took the men’s silver medal on Friday with a time of 23:08.5. Virginia senior Rohann Asfaw took fourth place 23:15, and Wake Forest sophomore Carter Coughlin rounded out the top five at 23:24.8.
The NC State women’s conference championship is the program’s sixth under the watch of head coach Laurie Henes, a former NC State All-American who ran on four championship teams and was the ACC women’s gold medalist in 1991.
In addition to Clairmonte, the Wolfpack was led by bronze medalist Hannah Steelman (20:17.3), a senior transfer from Wofford and a past two-time Southern Conference Runner of the Year. Sophomore Mariah Howlett checked in with a seventh-place time of 20:27.1, and her classmate Kelsey Chmiel (20:37.3) took 16th place.
Syracuse senior Amanda Vestri took the women’s silver medal at 20:06.1, and Duke senior Michaela Reinhart finished in fourth place at 20:19.3. Florida State junior Addi Coggins took fifth place with a time of 20:22.3.
The top 21 finishers in both the men’s and women’s field earned All-ACC honors. In addition, the top true freshman finisher in each of Friday's races will be recognized as the ACC Freshman of the Year. Notre Dame's Methner took honors with his strong showing on the men's side, and North Carolina's Sasha Neglia placed sixth to lead all first-year women's runners.
Methner was also honored during the regular season as ACC Men's Freshman of the Week on Sept. 23, and Negila was the ACC Women's Freshman of the Week on three ocassions.
