UVA’s Brownstead, Douglass Earn ACC Swimming Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia swept the first ACC Swimming weekly honors for the 2020-21 season, as freshman Matt Brownstead claimed ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week laurels, while sophomore Kate Douglass picked up the ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week distinction.
 
Brownstead won three events in his collegiate debut on Saturday at Navy, leading the No. 13 Cavalier men to a 181-117 triumph over the Midshipmen. The native of Port Matilda, Pennsylvania, topped the Cavaliers with a pair of individual wins. He swam the ninth-fastest time in the 50 freestyle (20.12) and 10th-fastest time in the 100 free (44.24) in the NCAA through its first three weeks of competition. He also recorded a leadoff time of 44.45 in the 400 free relay in helping the Cavaliers to a win in that event.
 
Douglass won four events as the top-ranked Virginia women rolled to a 188-104 victory at Navy on Saturday. The Pelham, New York, native set a Lejeune Hall record in the 100 free with an NCAA B time of 48.26 and was part of the 200 medley relay team that set a facility record (1:38.35). She also won the 50 free (22.43) and 200 individual medley (1:55.27), recording NCAA B times in both events. She currently holds the fastest 100 free and 200 IM time and third-fastest 50 free time in the NCAA this season.
