GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference today recognized the following student-athletes as ACC Cross Country Performers of the Week for September 30. This week’s honorees include Virginia senior Rohann Asfaw and North Carolina freshman Sasha Neglia, who were also recognized by the USTFCCCA as NCAA Division I National Male and Female Athletes of the Week.
ACC Men’s Performer of the Week – Rohann Asfaw, Virginia, Sr., Rockville, Md.
Asfaw led the Cavaliers to a first-place finish over Wake Forest and North Carolina in the season-opening Virginia Invite. With his 8K winning time of 24:03.1, Asfaw finished eight seconds ahead of second-place runner Jack Tiernan of Wake Forest, a returning All-ACC performer who placed eighth at the 2019 ACC Championships. Asfaw’s time was a career best, topping his time of 24:19.7 run at the 2019 Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. Asfaw is the first Cavalier to be named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season. He is the first male ACC athlete honored since former NCAA champion Justyn Knight of Syracuse in 2017.
ACC Women’s Performer & Freshman of the Week – Sasha Neglia, North Carolina, Fr., Kingsport, Tenn.
Racing in her first collegiate event, true freshman Sasha Neglia took first at the Virginia Invite and helped lead UNC to the overall team win. Her 5K time of 17:01.4 was 14 seconds faster than any other competitor and almost 19 seconds faster than the first non-Tar Heel runner. In addition to her ACC weekly honors, Neglia became the first runner from UNC to be named National Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA during the cross country season.
ACC Men’s Freshman of the Week – Wes Porter, Virginia, Fr., Kansas City, Mo.
In his collegiate debut, Porter ran a time of 24:15.4 at the Virginia Invite. The Kansas City native was the top freshman at the meet and placed fourth overall. He was the second UVA runner to finish the 8K race behind winner Rohann Asfaw.
