Clemson, Duke, Notre Dame, Pitt Advance to ACC Men’s Soccer Semifinals

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson, Duke, Notre Dame and Pitt advanced out of the quarterfinals of the 2021 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday. Top-seeded Pitt will entertain No. 5 seed Notre Dame at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the first semifinal match, while No. 2 seed Clemson will play host to No. 3 seed Duke at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Both matches will be broadcast on ACC Network.
 
The championship match will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. ESPNU has the broadcast.

All four matches Sunday were tight affairs that went down to the wire, including a pair that went to overtime. The home teams continued to shine Sunday, winning three of the four games. Home teams now are 7-0-1 in the 2021 tournament.
 
No. 3 Duke 3, No. 6 Wake Forest 2
In a back-and-forth battle, Duke (13-3-1) outlasted Wake Forest (11-6-1), 3-2, to advance to the semifinals. Duke’s Jai Bean scored his first career goal off a beautiful cross from Cameron Kerr in the 77th minute to break a 2-2 deadlock.
 
Jake Swallen gave the Demon Deacons the early advantage with a goal in the 27th minute, but Duke’s Torleifur Ulfarsson scored two goals just over a minute apart to push the Blue Devils ahead. Wake’s Nico Benalcazar headed home a Swallen corner in the final minute of the half to level the score.
 
No. 1 Pitt 2, No. 8 Virginia Tech 1 (2OT)
Valentin Noel recorded a brace, including the golden goal in the 103rd minute, to lift Pitt (11-4-1) to the win. Noel also scored in the fifth minute, but the Hokies (10-5-3) responded just over four minutes later when Kyle McDowell deftly slotted a shot just inside the near post past goalkeeper Nico Campuzano.
 
Pitt out-shot Virginia Tech 21-6 and put 10 shots on goal to four for Virginia Tech. Hokies goalkeeper Ben Martino made eight saves, including five in the second half.
 
No. 5 Notre Dame 0, No. 4 Louisville 0 (2OT; ND advances on PKs, 3-0)
Following a scoreless draw, Notre Dame (10-5-3) was perfect on its three penalty-kick attempts in advancing to the semifinals.
 
Louisville (10-6-1) was stopped on each of its three PK tries by ND goalkeeper Bryan Dowd.
 
No. 2 Clemson 2, No. 7 North Carolina 1
Clemson (13-4-0) rallied after conceding an early goal to reach the semifinals. North Carolina (11-6-1) grabbed the lead in the 20th minute when Santiago Herrera beat goalkeeper George Marks just inside the far post. The Tigers came back to tie the game in the 37th minute on an Isaiah Reid goal and then pulled ahead in the 76th minute when Quinn McNeill headed home a perfectly-placed cross into the box from Charlie Asensio.
 
Marks and UNC goalkeeper Alec Smir each made four saves in the game.
 
Tickets are on sale now for the championship match at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina and can be purchased HERE. General admission tickets are $10. Admission is free for youth ages 18 and under, as well as students of ACC institutions (with valid ID). 
 
Clemson is the tournament’s reigning champion. The Tigers defeated Pitt, 2-1, for the 2020 championship.
