GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke 197-pound senior Kaden Russell and North Carolina 133-pound junior Joe Heilmann have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week for December 21.
Russell delivered a trio of dominating individual performances to lead the Blue Devils to three dual match wins on Sunday, while Heilmann’s win over a nationally-ranked opponent spelled the difference in the Tar Heels’ two-point team victory at Appalachian State last Friday night.
Russell, of Cleveland, Ohio, accounted for 16 of Duke’s 89 team points in a sweep of Bloomsburg, The Citadel and Presbyterian while not dropping a single point himself. Russell pinned Bloomsburg’s David Tuttle in 49 seconds, then registered technical fall wins over The Citadel’s Ben Stemmett (18-0, 3:00) and Presbyterian’s Aiden Jean (16-0, 3:17).
Duke, at 6-4 overall, is off to its best team start since 2014-15, and Russell (11-6) has won his last four matches via fall or technical fall.
North Carolina’s Heilmann posted a 4-3 win over No. 23-ranked Codi Russell that proved decisive in the Tar Heels’19-17 team victory over the Mountaineers. Heilmann improved to 9-3 for the season, including a 2-1 mark in dual matches.
Heilmann, of South Plainfield, New Jersey, scored his second career win over a ranked opponent and his first since defeating No. 10 Louie Hayes of Virginia last February 13. Heilmann also earned ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week honors following that match.
