ACC Women’s Basketball Leads All Conferences with Eight NCAA Selections

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) -
Led by NC State’s No. 1 seed, eight Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball teams were selected to compete in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the most of any conference. Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest earned bids to participate in this year’s event.

It marks the third consecutive NCAA Tournament that the ACC has had eight teams selected, leading all conferences each year. In the last four NCAA Tournaments, ACC teams have earned 31 selections to compete in the field, also the most of any conference.

This year’s tournament is comprised of six championship rounds featuring 63 games that will be played using five venues and six courts in San Antonio, Austin and San Marcos, Texas, with the Alamodome hosting two of those courts.

After winning its second consecutive ACC Tournament Championship, NC State (20-2) was awarded a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Wolfpack is the top seed in the Mercado Region and is set to open NCAA Tournament action this Sunday (March 21) against No. 16 seed North Carolina A&T at 4 p.m. on ESPN.

Georgia Tech (15-8) earned a bid for the first time since 2014 under Blue Ribbon Panel ACC Coach of the Year Nell Fortner, as the Yellow Jackets are a No. 5 seed and will play No. 12 Stephen F. Austin on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

Florida State (10-8) garnered its eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament selection as the No. 9 seed in the Hemisfair Region and plays No. 8 Oregon State on ESPN2 Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

North Carolina (13-10) is a No. 10 seed and opens tournament action against Alabama on Monday at noon on ESPN.

In the Alamo Region, ACC regular-season champion Louisville (23-3) garnered the No. 2 seed and will play No. 15 Marist on Monday at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

For the first time since 1988 and just the second time in program history, Wake Forest (12-12) is in the NCAA Tournament. The ninth-seeded Demon Deacons will battle No. 8 Oklahoma State on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.

Virginia Tech (14-9) makes its first appearance since 2006, earning the No. 7 seed in the River Walk Region. The Hokies will face No. 10 seed Marquette at noon Sunday on ESPNU.

Syracuse (14-8) also secured its eighth straight NCAA Tournament selection, as the Orange are the No. 8 seed and play No. 9 South Dakota State at 5:30 p.m. Sunday on ESPN2.

Since 2014, the ACC leads all conferences with five appearances in the NCAA title game. The ACC also owns the most NCAA Tournament wins (88) of any conference since 2014. The next closest conference has 70.

First-round play will take place March 21-22 at the Alamodome, Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s (Texas), Frank Erwin Center (Texas), University Events Center (Texas State) and the UTSA Convocation Center.

Second-round play will shift entirely to venues in San Antonio, with the Alamodome, Bill Greehey Arena and the UTSA Convocation Center playing host March 23-24.

The championship will shift to the Alamodome for all remaining rounds, with the Sweet 16 games played March 27-28, Elite Eight games held March 29-30 and the Women’s Final Four conducted April 2 and 4.
