ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Open Thursday at NC State

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for  May 13-15 (Thursday through Saturday) at the Paul Derr Track Facility on the campus of NC State in Raleigh, North Carolina.
 
This marks the 10th year that NC State will serve as the host school for the event and the first time since 2013.
 
No spectators will be admitted to this year’s ACC Championships due to ongoing COVID-19 precautions, but ACC Network Extra plans livestream coverage from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday. Veteran ESPN announcer Shawn Kenney and analyst Larry Rawson will be on hand to add commentary beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday at 5 p.m. through conclusion of the meet.

Competition begins Thursday at 11 a.m. with the men’s javelin throw, which will be followed by finals in both the men’s and women’s pole vault, men’s and women’s hammer, and men’s and women’s long jump. Opening men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon events are also scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Prelims are set for early Thursday evening in several running events, followed by the women’s 10,000-meter final at 8:10 p.m. and the men’s 10,000m at 8:50.
 
A full slate of events and preliminaries continues Friday and Saturday, with finals in 20 running events wrapping up the Championships on Saturday evening from 5 until 9 p.m.
 
The Virginia Tech men and Florida State women enter this year’s ACC Outdoor Championships as defending champions after claiming team titles at the University of Virginia in 2019 (no outdoor championships were held in 2020 due to the pandemic).

The Virginia Tech men and Florida State women also won the most recent ACC Indoor Championships this past February at Clemson.

• Four student-athletes will enter this week’s Outdoor Championship having set conference records during the regular season.

Miami’s Michelle Atherley set an ACC mark in the heptathlon with 6,100 points at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 9 and currently ranks third nationally. North Carolina’s Jill Shippee topped her own previous ACC record in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 68.65 meters (225-3) at the Torrian Lawrence Memorial in Athens, Georgia.

On the men’s side, Florida State’s Adriaan Wildschutt set a new conference standard in the men’s 10,000 meters with his time of 28:25.11 at the Virginia Challenge on April 16. Then, in the final weekend of the regular season, Notre Dame’s Yared Nuguse set a new ACC mark in the 1,500 meters with a time 3:35.96 at the Oregon Twilight that stands as the best time by any American at any level in 2021 in an outdoor 1,500m. race. The mark also sets the Notre Dame record, ACC record and Oregon Twilight meet record.

ACC student-athletes currently rank among the nation’s top 10 in 42 events – 26 women’s and 16 men’s. The group includes Notre Dame’s Nuguse and Florida State’s Jo’Vaughn Martin, whose blazing time of 9.94 in the men’s 100 meters leads the nation.

Three other ACC men currently hold the nation’s No. 2 mark in their respective event, including Bowerman Watch List member Trey Cunningham of Florida State (13.28 in the 110 hurdles), Virginia’s Claudio Romero (64.39m/211-3 in the discus) and Pitt’s Felix Wolter (7950 in the decathlon).

NC State’s Elly Henes will run on her home track after posting a 15:18.75 mark in the women’s 5,000 meters at the West Coast Relays that currently stands second in the nation and 10th all time in the NCAA Division I record book.

The No. 11 Florida State’s women continue to lead a group of four ACC teams in the latest USTFCCCA national rankings. The Seminoles are joined by No. 14 Miami, No. 21 NC State and No. 22 Virginia,
 
The USTFCCCA’s latest men’s performance index places Florida State at No. 5. The Seminoles are joined by No. 24 Virginia among the top 25.
 
North Carolina has won a conference-best 14 ACC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships, ahead of Clemson’s seven and Virginia and Florida State with five each. On the men’s side, Florida State leads with 12 team titles, followed by Clemson with 11.
 
Florida State’s Bob Braman leads all active coaches with 10 ACC men’s outdoor championships. NC State’s Rollie Geiger owns five, and Virginia Tech’s Dave Cianelli has claimed four, including three in the last four meets.
 
Braman leads active ACC coaches in women’s championships with four.  Cianelli and Miami’s Amy have led their women’s teams to three ACC outdoor titles each, and Clemson’s Mark Elliott owns one women’s title.
