ACC Announces Final 2021 Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week Yared Nuguse of Notre Dame and three standouts from the Duke Twilight highlight the final Atlantic Coast Conference Track & Field Outdoor Performers of the Week of the 2021 outdoor season. The student-athletes will now turn their attention to the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are scheduled Thursday through Saturday at NC State.

Men’s Track Performer of the Week
Yared Nuguse, Sr., Notre Dame
Nuguse wrote another chapter in his storied Notre Dame career last Friday night, winning the 1,500m race in a time of 3:35.96 at the Oregon Twilight meet at the historic Hayward Field. Nuguse used his patented kick to chase down Oregon’s Cooper Teare on the final lap and pass him in a photo finish, recording the win by .01 seconds to add another dramatic finish in a big race to his career. The time of 3:35.96 is the best time by any American at any level in 2021 in an outdoor 1,500m race. The mark also set the Notre Dame record, ACC record and meet record. Nuguse now has the top time in the country in the 1,500m at the NCAA level.

Women’s Track Performer of the Week
Brittany Aveni, Gr., Duke
Aveni posted three first-place finishes at the Duke Twilight, including individual wins in the 100 meters (11.35) and 200 meters (23.20). Her 100 time broke her own previous school record (11.41) and ranks 35th among all NCAA runners this season. Her 200 meters time was the second-best of her career behind her school-record 22.96 earlier this season that ranks 11th nationally. The Geneva, Ohio, native also ran on a winning 4x100 relay team that checked in with a time of 44.74. She has now placed first in each of her last 11 events.

Men’s Field Performer of the Week
Ja’Von Douglas, Sr., NC State
Douglas took home the gold medal in the men’s long jump at Duke Twilight with a 7.56m (24-9.75) mark that was 0.14m beyond that of the second-place finisher. The placement marked his fourth first-place finish of the outdoor season in the event. The Atlanta senior’s jump at the meet was his second-best non-wind assisted mark of the season.

Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Moorea Mitchell, Fr., Duke
Mitchell secured the first first-place finish of her collegiate career in the hammer throw at the Duke Twilight with her mark of 51.16m (167-10). The Sunnyvale, California, freshman registered her second throw this season of more than 50 meters and fell just shy of her PR of 52.09m, which ranks as the fourth-best in Duke program history.
