Virginia Claims 11th Consecutive ACC Rowing Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. (theACC.com) –
 Highlighted by winning all five grand finals, Virginia earned its 11th consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship on Saturday morning at Lake Hartwell.
 
The Cavaliers finished with 99 points and have now won 20 titles in the 21 years of the championship’s existence.
 
“I’m so proud of these kids,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “We’ve all been through a lot, but the resilience of these kids, everybody, shows a lot. I’m just so proud of our team, this staff and program. It’s even more emotional this year to win this thing.”
 
Duke finished second with 84 points, while Syracuse was third with 81 and Clemson was fourth with 63. Notre Dame was fifth with 54 points, followed by Miami (40), Louisville (29), Boston College (24) and North Carolina (19).
 
The Cavaliers opened the grand finals of the regatta with a time of 7:01.449 to win the Third Varsity Eight, ahead of second-place Duke (7:07.461) and Syracuse (7:13.449).
 
The Second Varsity Eight was tightly contested, as each of the top three teams finished within less than five seconds of each other. Virginia clocked a time of 7:40.481, while Syracuse was second with a 7:43.991 and Duke was third at 7:44.505.
 
Virginia’s Varsity Four recorded a time of 7:25.204 to finish nearly 10 seconds ahead of the field in the grand finals. Duke was second with a time of 7:34.402 and Syracuse was third (7:36.312).
 
The Cavaliers and the Orange had a photo finish in the Second Varsity Eight, as UVa edged Syracuse with a time of 6:34.586-6:36.454.
 
Heading into the final event of the day, the Varsity Eight, Virginia, Syracuse and Duke were all within striking distance of the championship. Thanks to a strong showing in the highest scoring event (36 points for first place), the Cavaliers pulled away in the team standings to win the championship by 15 points.
 
Virginia started fast and continued the momentum throughout the race to log a time of 6:25.552, while Duke clocked a time of 6:30.266 and Syracuse recorded a 6:31.650 time.
 
Sauer was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the 13th time and Clemson sophomore Rachel Twitty, the stroke for the Tigers Varsity Eight, was tabbed the ACC Newcomer of the Year.
 
Virginia’s ACC Champion First Varsity Eight garnered ACC Crew of the Year and was composed of coxswain: Colette Glass, Stroke: Sonja Schlosser, Abbie Bird, Leia Till, Sophia Kershner, Katy Flynn, Cate Porter, Alli Terblanche and bow: Kate Kelly.
 
With the win, Virginia claims the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship while others will await the announcement of NCAA Selections on Tuesday, May 18 to learn if their seasons will continue. The 2021 NCAA Championship will be held May 23-30 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
