Virginia’s Kershner Headlines 2020-21 Rowing All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Sophia Kershner has been named the 2020-21 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the All-ACC Academic Team announced on Monday.

Kershner, a senior majoring in chemistry, helped lead the Cavaliers to their 11th consecutive ACC Championship. The Palmyra, Virginia, native was a member of Virginia’s Varsity Eight, which earned ACC Crew of the Year.

She is a First Team All-ACC selection and was also a member of the 2019 UVa Varsity Eight, which earned ACC Crew of the Year that season. Kershner is a team captain for the Cavaliers and helped the squad to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, she is a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete honoree and claimed a bronze medal at the 2019 World Rowing U23 Championships.

Virginia led all schools with 14 student-athletes on the team, followed by Duke with 13 and Syracuse with 12. Notre Dame had 10 student-athletes garner the recognition, while Clemson and Louisville each had nine. Miami had seven honorees, North Carolina had six and Boston College had five.

A total of 15 student-athletes who earned All-ACC honors this season also secured spots on the academic honors team: Clemson’s Cate Schrieber and Rachel Twitty, Duke’s Tara Fagan, Sydney Johnson and Gabby Salvati, Louisville’s McKenzie Sweeney, North Carolina’s Lauren Ferner, Notre Dame’s Marielle Corbett and Adelaide Lammers, Syracuse’s Lucy Pearce and Megan Varcoe, and Virginia’s Grace Comerford, Colette Glass, Katy Flynn and (Sophia) Kershner.

Boston College’s Jacqueline Taeubel is the lone three-time selection, while 12 student-athletes earned the honor for the second time in their careers.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
