NC State’s Butler Leads All-ACC Baseball Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State outfielder Jonny Butler has been recognized as the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced on Thursday.

Butler emerged as the ACC batting champion (.376) as he led the Wolfpack to a College World Series berth and ranked among the league leaders in slugging percentage (.663) and on-base percentage (.452).

A native of Channahon, Illinois, Butler collected First-Team All-ACC honors after finishing the regular season with a batting average better than .400. He was one of the most dangerous hitters in the country down the stretch, turning in 11 consecutive multi-hit games to conclude the regular season. Butler went 10-for-32 (.313) in NCAA Tournament play with a team-high 12 runs batted in, highlighted by a 3-for-4 outing with a home run and career-best five RBIs in his College World Series debut versus Stanford on June 19.

Named All-America by four publications, Butler has also excelled in the classroom while majoring in accounting. He is a three-time NC State Dean’s List student and a two-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

A total of 21 student-athletes who earned All-ACC honors this season also secured spots on the academic team, highlighted by first-team honorees Luke Waddell (Georgia Tech), Henry Davis (Louisville), Butler (NC State), John Michael Bertrand (Notre Dame), Andrew Abbott (Virginia) and Gavin Cross (Virginia Tech).

Duke's Matt Dockman and Joey Loperfido and UVa's Abbott are the only student-athletes on the 2021 All-ACC Academic Team to garner the award for the third time.

Additionally, five student-athletes on the All-ACC Freshman Team earned All-ACC Academic Team honors.

All 14 ACC baseball programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team with Duke leading all schools with seven selections, followed by Notre Dame with six. Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, and NC State each had five.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released later this month.
