NC State’s Chmiel Leads All-ACC Women’s Cross Country Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State All-America runner Kelsey Chmiel has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced Wednesday.

Also voted the 2021 ACC Women’s Runner of the Year by the league’s head coaches, Chmiel recorded an impressive junior campaign in which she was the top finisher for the national champion Wolfpack in five meets. The Saratoga Springs, New York, native was the ACC and the NCAA Southeast Regional Champion and placed sixth at the NCAA Championships.

With her ACC Championship victory, Chmiel became the third consecutive individual conference champion from NC State and garnered her third All-ACC cross country accolades. In addition to her All-ACC honors, Chmiel was named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Runner of the Year while earning All-Region and All-America recognition.

A dean’s list student throughout her time at NC State, Chmiel has maintained a perfect GPA while pursuing a degree in animal science. She was one of a league-high nine runners from the Wolfpack's 2021 NCAA Championship squad that also earned a spot on the All-ACC Cross Country Academic Team.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
