Pitt's Heller, Virginia Tech's Lewis Earn ACC Wrestler of the Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Redshirt seniors Holden Heller of Pitt and Mekhi Lewis of Virginia Tech have been recognized as ACC Co-Wrestlers of the Week after each delivered important wins versus fellow ranked opponents during last weekend’s dual action.

In a wild dual that featured a little bit of everything, Heller helped ensure that the No. 20 Panthers emerged with a team victory at Columbia on Sunday. Heller’s 4-2 decision over No. 12 Joshua Ogunsanya at 165 pounds halted the Lions’ momentum and sparked a nine-point Pitt comeback that resulted in a 19-18 dual win. The Hofstra transfer and former EIWA champion, ranked No. 17 in his weight class, secured a second-period takedown and rode out Ogunsanya for the remainder of the frame to notch an upset when the Panthers needed it the most.

Virginia Tech’s third-ranked Lewis scored a 3-2 decision over No. 11 Peyton Mocco at 174 pounds that proved decisive as the No. 9 Hokies opened their home dual slate with an exciting 17-15 win over No. 7 Missouri. Lewis garnered a takedown early – and nearly added another before it was waved off – then added riding time and an escape to pick up the one-point victory. It was one of many exciting moments in a high-level bout that included eight head-to-head matchups between ranked wrestlers.

The Hokies travel to Palo Alto, California, to face Stanford and Lindenwood this Sunday to close out the first half of their competition slate.

Pitt returns to dual action with an exciting start to 2023, hosting the Backyard Brawl against rival West Virginia at Fitzgerald Field House on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.
