Finish Lines
• The Florida State men lead all ACC teams in this week’s USTFCCCA rankings at No. 16. Three ACC women’s teams are ranked among the top 25 – No. 23 Duke, No. 24 North Carolina and No. 25 NC State.
• ACC student-athletes entered the weekend holding the nation’s top time or mark in five events. NC State’s Katelyn Tuohy remains the leader in the women’s 1500 meters at 4:12.58. Notre Dame’s Dylan Jacobs clocked in at 28:01.94 at the 62nd annual Mt. SAC Relays to move to the top of the chart in the men’s 10,000 meters. Florida State’s Trey Cunningham made his season debut in the men’s 110-meter hurdles at last weekend’s Tom Jones Memorial with a time of 13.22 that is currently the fastest in the world and is tied for 10th on the NCAA all-time list in the event.
• In field events, Decio Andrade continues to hold the No. 1 spot in the hammer throw following his toss of 71.76 meters (235’5”) at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on March 26. North Carolina’s Madison Wiltrout regained her national lead in the women’s javelin at Tom Jones Memorial with a gold medal throw of 57.11 meters (187’4’).
• ACC student-athletes currently hold top-five rankings in 15 total events nationally – eight men’s and seven women’s.
• The late John Woodruff, who made history as Pitt’s first Olympic gold medalist by winning the men’s 800 meters in the 1936 Games at Berlin, has been selected as one of the inaugural inductees into the Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame for track & field and cross country. The first class of 30 inductees – chosen solely on their accomplishments while a collegiate athlete – includes other legends such as Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Wilma Rudolph and Jackie Joyner. The induction ceremony is set to take place at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene, Oregon, on the evening of June 6. The induction will precede the 100th edition of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held at Hayward Field June 8-11.
• Louisville’s Gabriela Leon (pole vault) and Miami’s Isaiah Holmes (jumps) are among the ACC student-athletes who have been named 2022 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, and will be featured in the April 28 edition of Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are students of color who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, are at least sophomores academically, and have been active on their campuses or in their communities. Of the nearly 1,000 scholar-athletes nominated, one male and one female athlete will be selected as Sports Scholar of the Year.
