Records Fall on Opening Day of ACC Outdoor Championships

DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina junior Madison Wiltrout became the first student-athlete to set an overall conference record at the 2022 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and she did it in the biggest of ways.

Wiltrout actually established three new records with her monster heave of 60.03 meters (196’11”) on her sixth and final javelin throw during Thursday’s opening meet session at Duke’s Morris Williams Stadium.

Wiltrout broke the previous ACC overall record of 196’6” held by Virginia Tech’s Irena Sediva since 2015, as well as Sediva’s ACC Championship record of 192’6” set in 2017. Wiltrout also shattered her own facility record of 181’6” set last season, when the Tar Heels visited for the Duke Invitational.

Florida State’s men, buoyed by two record-setting performances of their own, took the early lead in the team standings. The Louisville women finished the day in first place following gold medal performances in Thursday’s final two field events.

Other first-day highlights included the performance of North Carolina’s Jill Shippee, who became the first women’s hammer thrower to claim three consecutive ACC Championship gold medals in her event.

On the men’s side, Florida State’s Isaac Grimes successfully defended his gold medal in the long jump with a facility-record mark of 8.05 meters (26’5”). And despite running in a steady downpour at the session’s conclusion, FSU’s Ahmed Muhamad splashed to a first-place finish in the men’s 10,000 meters with a meet and facility record time of 28:48.69.

The Seminoles’ Lauren Ryan added another facility record with her winning time of 32:56.53 in the women’s 10,000K. And Virginia freshman Mia Barnett qualified for the women’s 1,500 meter finals with yet another facility-record time of 4:16.51 in the prelims.

Louisville senior Gabriela Leon took the gold medal in the women’s pole vault at 14’9,” but weather conditions forced a halt to the action and prevented her from pursuing the coveted 15-foot mark, as well as possible ACC and facility records.

Day two of the three-day ACC Championship is set for Friday, beginning with the first of five remaining men’s decathlon events. Pitt’s Felix Wolter led at the halfway mark Thursday after parlaying three second-place finishes and one first place into 4,203 points.

Finals in six more field events are also scheduled for Friday, as well as the men’s and women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. The men’s pole vault, originally set for an early-evening start, has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. due to potential inclement weather later in the day.

Duke’s Erin Marsh led the heptathlon at the conclusion of Thursday’s session with 3,667 points after placing among the top three in each of the first four events.
