FSU Men, Duke Women Hold Team Leads After Day 2 of ACC Championships
DURHAM, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Florida State men and Duke women held narrow leads in the team competitions following the conclusion of action on Friday at the 2022 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Duke’s Morris Williams Stadium.
With nine events in the books on both sides, the FSU men have racked up 50 points, while North Carolina is second with 46 points and Virginia is third with 42. The Duke women lead with 49.5 points, while Notre Dame is second with 40 points, Virginia Tech is third with 39 and Louisville is fourth with 38.5.
A pair of ACC Championship records were set on Friday. Virginia’s Ethan Dabbs won his third straight ACC javelin title, smashing two of his own conference records with a toss of 272 feet, the top mark in the nation this season. That broke his overall conference record of 263’10”, set on April 22, as well as the ACC Championship record of 249’6” that he set during the 2019 ACC Championships. The throw also was a facility record.
Florida State’s Trey Cunningham set the ACC Championship record in the men’s 110-meter hurdles in the Friday prelims, finishing in a time of 13.13 and breaking a 10-year-old meet record from Miami’s Devon Hill (13.35).
Pitt’s Felix Wolter won the decathlon after amassing 7,880 points over the two-day event, the highest total at the ACC Championships in 10 years and the second most in championship history. On the women’s side, Duke’s Erin Marsh captured the heptathlon with a total of 5,946 points, the third most in ACC Championship history.
Virginia Tech’s Ben Fleming capped the evening by winning the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:31.97, just 0.68 seconds shy of the ACC Championship record.
