Virginia Claims 2022 ACC Rowing Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia won four of the five Grand Finals and tallied 98 total points to claim the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship Saturday morning at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina. It is the Cavaliers’ 12th consecutive ACC rowing title and 21st overall in the 22 years of the regatta’s existence.
  
Syracuse finished second with 83 points to narrowly nudge out Duke, who had 82. Clemson was fourth with 60 points, followed by Miami (52), Louisville (43), Notre Dame (29), Boston College (26) and North Carolina (21).
 
The Cavaliers won the Third Varsity Eight (6:39.820), Varsity Four (7:10.892), Second Varsity Eight (6:26.132) and Varsity Eight (6:23.415). Duke claimed the Second Varsity Four with a time of 7:11.587.
 
Virginia, Syracuse and Duke were all within striking distance of the championship entering the Varsity Eight competition. A strong showing in the highest scoring event (36 points for first place), enabled the Cavaliers to pull away in the team standings and win the championship by 15 points.
  
Virginia’s Kevin Sauer was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the 14th time and North Carolina’s Kristen Siermachesky was tabbed the ACC Newcomer of the Year.
 
Virginia’s ACC Champion First Varsity Eight garnered ACC Crew of the Year and was composed of coxswain Vivi Van Ingen, Kate Kelly, Leia Till, Lauren Benedict, Sonja Schlosser, Nicola Lawless, Alli Terblanche, Kelsey Gems and Eva Fronhoffer.
 
With the win, Virginia claims the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship while others will await the announcement of NCAA Selections on Tuesday, May 17 to learn if their seasons will continue. The 2022 NCAA Championship will be held May 27-29 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
