North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech Earn Baseball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC) – North Carolina outfielder Vance Honeycutt and Wake Forest designated hitter Jake Reinisch have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week for May 16, while Virginia Tech right-hander Jordan Geber earned the nod as ACC Pitcher of the Week.

ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member select media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Honeycutt, a freshman from Salisbury, North Carolina, led UNC to a 4-1 week that included wins over Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern and a series win over Wake Forest. Honeycutt hit .474 (9-for-19) over the five-game stretch and homered in each of the first three contests. Five of his nine hits went for extra bases as he closed the week with seven RBI and six runs scored. Honeycutt, who recorded career highs with four hits and three stolen bases versus Gardner-Webb, now has 15 home runs and 27 stolen bases this year. He is the only player in the country this season with at least 15 homers and 20 stolen bases.

Reinisch, a sophomore from Clifton Park, New York, led Wake Forest at the plate with a .533 average to go along with team-highs in hits (eight), RBIs (five) and slugging percentage (1.067) in four games. He tallied an extra-base hit in three games this week, including back-to-back games with home runs against North Carolina. In Sunday’s win over the Tar Heels, Reinisch posted a career-high four hits and tied his career-high with four RBI – which came on his first career grand slam in the fifth inning. Reinisch has now hit safely in each of his last five games.

Geber started two of No. 5 Virginia Tech's four games last week, earning the nod against Liberty (May 11) and No. 7 Louisville (May 15). The Severn, Maryland, native threw a combined seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while recording nine strikeouts across 24 batters faced. Geber logged a perfect outing during his midweek start against Liberty, retiring each of the nine batters he faced in order. On Sunday, he notched five strikeouts against Louisville, denying the Cardinals a hit until the fourth inning. He also picked off a Louisville runner who reached on an error.
