CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina closed the regular season on a tear, and the eighth-seeded Tar Heels continued their winning ways by downing 12th-seeded Clemson, 9-2, in Tuesday night's ACC Baseball Championship Pool A game at Truist Field.

UNC received a solid outing from sophomore starting pitcher Max Carlson, Danny Serretti and Vance Honeycutt drove in two runs apiece, and Mikey Madej hit his third home run of the season as the Tar Heels won for the 12th time in their last 14 outings. UNC leadoff hitter Angel Zarate reached base in all five of his plate appearances, finishing 4-for-4 with a walk and four runs scored.

The Tar Heels (35-19) will now face top-seeded Virginia Tech (40-11) in Friday night’s 7 p.m. tournament game, with the winner claiming Pool A’s spot in Saturday’s 1 p.m. semifinal. The Hokies took two of three from UNC when the teams met in Chapel Hill on April 1-3.

Clemson (35-22) will face Virginia Tech in Thursday’s 7 p.m. tournament game.

Carlson (2-2) pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out four batters and walking one. It marked Carlson’s second-longest career stint, surpassed only by his 6.2-innings outing versus Virginia on April 22. His teammates provided plenty of breathing room by scoring at least one run in each of the first five innings.

Clemson starter Mack Anglin (6-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings.

The Tigers scored their first run in the second inning when Blake Wright reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on Bryar Hawkins’ sacrifice fly. Clemson closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth on Will Taylor’s two-out RBI single.
