CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State’s bats awakened in the middle innings Tuesday, and the 10th-seeded Wolfpack rode the wave to an 11-8 win over sixth-seeded Wake Forest on the opening day of the ACC Baseball Championship.
After falling behind 4-0 in the early going, NC State scored six runs in the fifth inning and five more in the seventh to turn the tables on the Demon Deacons, who swept the Wolfpack in Raleigh last weekend to close out the regular season.
NC State (34-20) will face third-seeded Miami (39-16) in the final game of Wednesday’s session at 7 p.m., with the winner earning a spot in Saturday’s 5 p.m. semifinal. Wake Forest (39-17-1) will face the Hurricanes on Friday at 3 p.m.
The Demon Deacons outhit the Wolfpack 13-8 in Tuesday’s game, but six of NC State’s hits went for extra bases, including Josh Hood’s two-run double that keyed the big six-run fifth inning and his home run to lead off the seventh inning. Payton Green added a two-run homer for NC State in the seventh, Devonte Brown hit a solo shot, and Dominic Pololli tripled in a run.
Brock Wilken hit his 20th home run of the season for the Demon Deacons and also had a run-scoring single and a triple in falling one double shy of the cycle.
Canaan Silver (7-1), who came on in relief with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning, picked up the win on the mound. Chris Villaman worked the final three innings for the Wolfpack to earn his 10th save of the season.
Crawford Wade (3-1) took the loss for Wake Forest.
