CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech departed the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship on a winning note.
Drew Compton went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs, and the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets received a quality outing from starting pitcher Marquis Grissom Jr. to turn back second-seeded Louisville, 9-4, in the opening game of Thursday’s session at Truist Field.
The game closed out tournament action for both teams, who will now turn their attention to Monday’s unveiling of the NCAA Championship bracket.
Compton cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the third inning and added a double and a pair of singles to fall a home run shy of the cycle. Grissom (4-5) worked 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven batters and walking two.
Colin Hall went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI for the Yellow Jackets (34-22), and Kevin Parada added his 85th RBI of the season to add to his ACC-leading total. Rightfielder Jake DeLeo, who entered the game in the sixth inning, delivered a triple and a double, the latter of which plated Georgia Tech’s final three runs in the top of the ninth.
The Yellow Jackets finished with 14 hits and nine walks versus 10 Louisville pitchers and took home the win despite leaving 16 runners on base. The Cardinals (38-18-1) could look back at some missed opportunities of their own after collecting 10 hits and leaving 11 runners on.
Louisville leadoff hitter Brandon Anderson finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, and Jack Payton went 2-for-4 with an RBI single.
Dawson Brown pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief of Grissom to pick up his fifth save of the year. Kade Grundy (1-1) took the loss for Louisville.
