June 1, 2022
• Nine Atlantic Coast Conference teams will be among the 64-team field when the 2022 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship gets underway this Friday. ACC champion North Carolina will be a regional host, along with Coastal Division winner Virginia Tech, Atlantic Division winner Louisville and Miami. Florida State, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Virginia, and Wake Forest also earned berths in this year’s tournament.
• The ACC’s nine teams in this year’s tournament are tied for most of any conference. No. 4 Virginia Tech owns the ACC’s highest national overall seed, followed by No. 6 Miami, No. 10 North Carolina and No. 12 Louisville. Each of those teams is seeded first in its respective regional.
• The ACC has placed at least six teams in the NCAA tournament for 18 straight years. This is the sixth year since 2010 that at least eight ACC teams have landed spots in the field. This year’s nine teams are the second most in league history, trailing only the ACC’s 10 selections in 2016.
• Two of the ACC teams selected this year rank among the top five nationally for all-time NCAA tournament appearances: No. 2 Florida State (59) and No. 3 Miami (48).
• Led by tournament MVP Vance Honeycutt, North Carolina claimed the 2022 ACC Baseball Championship, defeating NC State 9-5 in the title game at Charlotte’s Truist Field on May 29. The ACC title is the eighth for the Tar Heels since the conference began determining its champion by tournament format in 1973 and the program’s 12th ACC baseball title overall.
• Sunday’s sell-out crowd 10,500 set an attendance record for an ACC Baseball Championship title game. It stands as the second-largest crowd ever to watch a college baseball game in the state of North Carolina, topped only by the 11,392 that watched UNC’s 2-1, 18-inning win over NC State on the fourth day of the 2013 ACC Championship at Durham, North Carolina. The previous high attendance for an ACC Championship title game prior to Sunday was the 9,759 that watched Florida State defeat NC State in 2015 at Durham. The total attendance of 58,837 for this year’s ACC Championship is the fifth highest in tournament history.
• There were 54 home runs hit in the 15 games played at this year’s ACC Baseball Championship, topping the previous tournament record of 51 set in 2010 (in 13 games) at Greensboro, North Carolina.
The ACC in the NCAA
• At least one ACC team has reached the College World Series each of the previous 15 years in which it has been held, and multiple ACC teams reached the CWS 10 times during that span.
• The ACC has placed a total of 28 teams in the past 15 College World Series, an average of just under two per season.
• Ninety-nine ACC teams have earned NCAA bids in the last 13 tournament years. The 14 current ACC teams have a combined 98 College World Series appearances.
• Three ACC teams rank among the top five nationally for most all-time tournament appearances: No. 2 Florida State (59), No. 3 Miami (48), and No. 5 Clemson (44).
