Wolfpack's Tuohy Wraps Up NCAAs with 5K Title

EUGENE, Ore.(GoPack.com) - NC State track & field sophomore Katelyn Tuohy won the 5000m NCAA Championship on the closing day of competition Saturday, crossing the finish line in 15:18.39. The title is the Wolfpack’s second outdoor 5000m title in a row, and the championship is the first individual national title for Tuohy.

With Tuohy’s win in 2022 and Elly Henes' win in 2021, the Pack has won back-to-back national 5000m titles for the first time since Julie Shea won three consecutive AIAW 5000m gold medals in 1979, 1980 and 1981.

Tuohy became the fifth ACC student-athlete to claim a gold medal at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships, joining Notre Dame’s Dylan Jacobs (men’s 10,000 meters), Florida State’s Trey Cunningham, Virginia’s Claudio Romero (men’s discus) and Louisville’s Gabriela Leon.

NC State and Virginia Tech scored 14 points each to tie for 17th place and led ACC women’s teams in scoring at this year’s Championship. Duke (12 points) tied for 21st place, and Florida State and Louisville (10 each) tied for 25th.

Blue Devil Bronze
Graduate students Lauren Hoffman and Erin Marsh earned bronze medals and garnered All-America First Team honors in the 400m hurdles and heptathlon, respectively, as the No. 16 Duke women's track and field team wrapped up a historic season with the final day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

"Both teams gained valuable experience competing at this meet," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Shawn Wilbourn.  "Some of the best athletes in the world lined up this week and we held our own. It can be humbling but this is the level we are striving for."

With the third-place finishes, the pair posted the highest placements of their careers at the national outdoor meet.

Hoffman finished off an outstanding season, one that saw her reset her own school record four times, with another stellar performance. The Haymarket, Virginia, native improved upon her 10th-place finish from a year ago, clocking 55.58 to finish third overall.

After finishing fourth in the heptathlon at the 2021 Outdoor Championships and taking home the best finish by a Blue Devil since 2014, Marsh raised the bar once again. The Buford, Georgia, product upended her previous best placement as she totaled 5,929 points to place third overall.
