Leon, Cunningham, Jacobs Headline All-ACC Outdoor Track & Field Academic Teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com)  -- Three NCAA champions have been named the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year for Outdoor Track and Field and lead the sport’s All-ACC Academic Teams announced on Friday.

Louisville pole vaulter Gabriela Leon has been named the ACC Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Florida State hurdler Trey Cunningham and Notre Dame distance runner Dylan Jacobs are the ACC Men’s Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Louisville’s Leon, who hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, took the gold medal in the women’s pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a clearance of 4.60 meters (15-1), which was only the second 15-foot or better winning mark in meet history. Earlier this season, Leon topped 4.61 meters (15-1.5) at the Clark Wood Invitational and became just the fourth female vaulter in collegiate history to climb 4.60m (15-1) or higher three different times in a season. She was voted the ACC Women’s Outdoor Field Performer of the Year by the league’s head coaches.

An ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and a five-time Louisville Dean’s Scholar, Leon graduated from Louisville with a degree in Exercise Science and a career GPA of 3.83. She earned a 4.0 GPA in both the fall and spring semesters of the most recent academic year.

Florida State’s Cunningham won all 10 of his 110 men’s hurdles races this outdoor season.  He posted a time of 13.22 or faster in nine of those events, becoming the first athlete in NCAA history to do so. The graduate student from Winfield, Alabama, equaled the second-fastest time in NCAA history (13.00) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on his way to a national title. The 13.00 time matched the ACC record first set in 1979 by Maryland’s Renaldo Nehemiah.

Voted the ACC Men’s Track Outdoor Track Performer of the Year,  Cunningham is a Bowerman semifinalist and was named the Men’s Outdoor National Athlete of the Year by Track and Field News.

Cunningham, who earlier this year became the first student-athlete to be named the ACC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete three consecutive seasons, earned a graduate degree in Sport Management, is a five-time selection to the Dean’s List and is eligible for selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the fifth time.

Notre Dame’s Jacobs won the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 28:12.32, becoming the first Fighting Irish male athlete since 2001 to earn the gold medal in that event.

A few weeks prior to Nationals, Jacobs set a meet record in the 5,000 meters at the ACC Outdoor Championships with his time of 13:23.45 and also qualified for the NCAA Championships in that event. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Jacobs is a repeat Dean’s List honoree who has averaged above 3.5 for his collegiate career while pursuing a degree in Business Analytics.

Leon, Cunningham and Jacobs were all named Region Athletes of the Year by the USTFCCCA.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
