EUGENE, Oregon (theACC.com) – Notre Dame’s Dylan Jacobs became the first Atlantic Coast Conference student-athlete to claim a gold medal at this year’s NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, using a strong finish to take first place in the men’s 10,000 meters Wednesday night at historic Hayward Field.
Wednesday evening’s session also saw Jeremiah Davis and Isaac Grimes claim the silver and bronze medals in the men’s long jump to lead the Florida State men’s 16-point showing on opening day. The ACC claimed yet another silver medal in the javelin, with Virginia’s Ethan Dabbs taking home second place.
Women’s competition begins this evening, with the track action set for broadcast on ESPNU. All field events can be seen via live stream on ESPN3.

Jacobs Strikes Gold
With an impressive time of 28:12.32, Notre Dame senior Dylan Jacobs took home the NCAA Championship in the 10,000 meters. Despite taking a spill earlier in the race, Jacobs regrouped and eventually overtook Abdihamid Nur of Northern Arizona in the final lap. Jacobs posted a final lap time of 55.45.
Jacobs became the second men’s runner in Notre Dame history to take the 10k title and the first since Ryan Shay in 2001. In addition, Jacobs is the third Notre Dame track star to win the 10k national championship, as Molly Seidel also won on the women’s side in 2015. It marks the 17th men’s outdoor individual title (ninth on track side) for the Irish, with the most recent prior being Yared Nuguse in 2019.
Podium Finishes for FSU
Jeremiah Davis and Isaac Grimes put on a show in the long jump that ended in a thrilling but heartbreaking finish for the Seminoles. On his fifth jump, Davis jumped a personal best 8.00m to move him into first, and Grimes followed him with a mark of 7.97m to move him into second.
Davis had the lead into the final jump but Wayne Pinnock from Tennessee tied his mark of 8.00m and won the event thanks to having a second-best jump. Grimes would finish third. Davis and Grimes became the first long jump duo in school history to garner First Team All-America honors.
Dabbs Takes Silver
Virginia’s Ethan Dabbs competed in the javelin at the NCAA Championships for the first time since his freshman season in 2019. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in July of 2021, he returned to the stage as the top seed. The senior competed amongst an incredibly deep field of competitors, five of which surpassed the 78-meter mark.
In a thrilling competition, Dabbs sat in third place after his first three throws. In the finals, the senior vaulted into second with his first of the additional three attempts. Looking to best the leading mark from Penn’s Mark Minichello (81.17m / 266’3”), Dabbs let go of his best throw of the competition but fell just short of the title at 79.68 meters (261’5”).
With his second-place finish, Dabbs ties Brian Koller for the best finish in the javelin at the NCAA Championships in UVA history. Kollar won the silver in 2000 with a mark of 72.20 meters. The finish also marks the second time Dabbs has earned All-American honors.
