CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Following an extremely competitive and exciting regular season, the Atlantic Coast Conference unveiled its 2023 Field Hockey season honors and All-ACC Team on Monday. The honors were selected by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches.

Boston College graduate student Margo Carlin and Duke redshirt freshman Alaina McVeigh shared ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Syracuse senior back Eefke van den Nieuwenhof was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. Duke senior Piper Hampsch notched ACC Goalkeeper of the Year honors, while North Carolina’s Charly Bruder earned Freshman of the Year laurels. Duke’s Pam Bustin was selected Coach of the Year.

McVeigh is Duke’s first ACC Offensive Player of the Year since Katie Grant in 2005, while Carlin is BC’s first ACC Offensive Player of the Year honoree since Bob Dirks in 2006. Carlin and McVeigh tied for the ACC lead in points per game at 2.0. McVeigh led all ACC players in goals with 16, while Carlin was third with 12. Carlin was second in the ACC in assists with eight.

Van den Nieuwenhof is Syracuse’s first Defensive Player of the Year since Alyssa Manley in 2015. She was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3 and spearheads the Orange defense. A threat on both ends of the field, she also ranked second in the conference in goals with 13.

Hampsch keyed a Duke defense that allowed just 18 goals in the regular season, tied for the fewest for any ACC team. She totaled five shutouts and a 1.53 goals-against average, both of which ranked second in the ACC. She led all ACC goalkeepers with .769 save percentage, allowing just 18 goals while making 60 saves.

Bruder led all ACC true freshmen with nine goals this season, which tied for fifth overall in the league. Her 24 total points (nine goals, six assists) ranked seventh among all ACC players and tops among true freshmen.

Bustin was named ACC Coach of the Year for the third time (2011, 2016) after leading the Blue Devils to a share of the ACC regular-season championship and a 14-3 record (5-1 ACC). It marked Duke’s first regular-season crown since 2016. Ranked No. 2 nationally in the latest NFHCA poll, the Blue Devils were picked seventh in the Preseason ACC Coaches Poll and made a huge turnaround, doubling their win total from last season.

All seven ACC teams had at least one First-Team All-ACC honoree. Virginia led all schools with six players on the All-ACC Team, including five on the second team. Duke had five honorees and tied Syracuse for the most first-teamers with three.

The 2023 ACC Field Hockey Championship will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at the University of Virginia’s Turf Field in Charlottesville, Virginia. Six-time reigning conference champion North Carolina is the No. 1 seed and earned a bye into Wednesday’s 1 p.m. semifinal game. The Tar Heels will face the winner of Tuesday’s 1 p.m. quarterfinal matchup between No. 4 Virginia and No. 5 Syracuse.

In the second game Tuesday, No. 2 Duke will play No. 7 Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m. The Tuesday nightcap will feature No. 3 Louisville taking on No. 6 Boston College at 6 p.m. The winners of these two games will play the second contest on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

The championship game will be played at 7 p.m. Friday. ACC Network will show all tournament action live, with Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush on the call.

Six ACC programs are ranked in the latest NFHCA Top 20. Duke held the No. 2 spot and was followed by No. 4 North Carolina, No. 5 Virginia, No. 10 Syracuse, No. 12 Louisville and No. 13 Boston College.
