CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – In a wild day of quarterfinal action Sunday in the 2023 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship, three of the four road teams advanced with No. 6 Syracuse, No. 7 North Carolina and No. 9 Louisville moving on, while No. 4 seed Clemson rallied at home to advance via penalty kicks.

North Carolina won at No. 2 seed Wake Forest, 1-0, while Louisville ousted top-seeded Notre Dame, 4-3, with a late goal. Syracuse scored in the waning minutes to force extra time and later advanced via penalty kicks at No. 3 seed Virginia. The lone home team to advance, Clemson rallied to push No. 5 seed Duke into overtime also then advanced following PKs.

The tournament continues Wednesday with semifinal play, as North Carolina travels to Syracuse at 6 p.m. and Louisville visits Clemson at 8 p.m., with both matches airing on ACC Network. The championship match will be broadcast from WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, on ESPNU on Sunday, Nov. 12, at noon.

No. 9 Louisville 4, No. 1 Notre Dame 3
In a crazy match in South Bend, Indiana, Louisville (11-4-3) got a hat trick off the bench from Sander Roed in ending Notre Dame’s 10-match unbeaten streak. UofL built a 3-0 lead, all on Roed goals, only to see Notre Dame (11-2-4) fight back to tie the game in the 88th minute on Bryce Boneau’s second goal of the second half. The Cardinals then stunned the Fighting Irish by coming right back, scoring 66 seconds later on a Josh Jones header following a Roed free kick. Roed’s hat trick was just the second in ACC Tournament history, while his seven total points set a tournament record; both records were previously held by Wake Forest’s Ihor Dotsenko in the 1997 first round against NC State.

No. 7 North Carolina 1, No. 2 Wake Forest 0
Ahmad Al-Qaq scored in the 16th minute and North Carolina (9-3-5) made it stick in winning 1-0 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, ending the Demon Deacons’ 12-match unbeaten streak. Wake Forest (11-2-5) challenged the UNC defense, particularly during the second half, but goalkeeper Andrew Cordes made six saves in recording the clean sheet.

No. 6 Syracuse 1, No. 3 Virginia 1 (OT) – Syracuse advances on PKs, 4-3
The reigning ACC and NCAA champions, Syracuse (8-3-7) trailed for most of the second half before Mateo Leveque equalized in the 84th minute. The Orange had a multitude of chances throughout the match, but UVa goalkeeper Joey Batrouni made a career-high 13 saves. He also saved Syracuse’s first penalty kick of the shootout, but the Orange connected on the next four to advance. In his first match back after missing significant time with an injury, Leo Afonso scored in the 51st minute for Virginia (10-3-4).

No. 4 Clemson 3, No. 5 Duke 3 (OT) – Clemson advances on PKs, 4-1
Clemson (9-3-4) advanced at home following a wild, back-and-forth battle which included a pair of overtime scores. Duke (11-3-3) took a 2-1 advantage in the 54th minute on a Clemson own goal, but the Tigers rallied on Tyler Trimnal’s second goal of the match in the 75th minute. Clemson forged ahead in the 94th minute on an Alex Meinhard penalty kick, but Duke equalized on Ulfur Bjornsson’s goal just over three minutes later. Clemson then converted on each of its penalties in the shootout to advance.
