CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – As five programs around the Atlantic Coast Conference prepare for the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament, the conference will once again look to uphold its longstanding legacy of success. The ACC has claimed 15 of the past 21 national championships with North Carolina claiming the most recent title in 2022.
The 2023 edition of the NCAA Tournament marks the 10th time in 11 seasons in which at least four conference teams earned postseason bids. The ACC’s five selections this season are the most of any conference.
North Carolina and Duke will host first and second round matchups this weekend after claiming the first and third national seeds, respectively. Led by first-year head coach Erin Matson, the ACC Champion Tar Heels continue their quest for their fifth national championship in six seasons.
Six teams from the ACC remain ranked in the NFHCA weekly poll with all five postseason-bound teams ranking inside the top 11. North Carolina takes over in the top spot nationally while Duke remains locked in the third spot. Other ranked squads from around the conference include No. 5 Virginia, No. 10 Louisville, No. 11 Syracuse, and No. 14 Boston College.

- The ACC’s record number of all-time NCAA Field Hockey Championships stands at 22, including 15 of the last 21, following UNC's title in 2022.
- After earning five bids in 2023, ACC teams have earned at least four NCAA bids in 10 of the last 11 seasons.
- The ACC has placed at least one team in the NCAA title game in 22 of the last 24 NCAA Championships – and 30 times in the last 33 years.
- In the ACC’s first 42 years as an NCAA Field Hockey conference, league teams have accounted for more than half the total appearances in the national title game (43 of 84).
- UNC claimed its 10th NCAA championship with a 2-1 win over Northwestern in 2022. The Tar Heels' 10 field hockey championships are the most in NCAA history.
- North Carolina claimed its seventh straight ACC Championship and eighth in the last nine tournaments. UNC has now captured 26 of the 41 ACC titles all-time.
- For the second year in a row and the fifth time in the past six years, North Carolina is the top overall seed in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament. The Tar Heels look to defend their title and claim their fifth national championship in six seasons.
- The Tar Heels earned the ACC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Duke 2-0 in the ACC Field Hockey Championship Game. UNC will meet William & Mary after the Tribe took down Sacred Heart 4-0 in the Opening Round.
- No. 3 Duke, Louisville, Virginia, and Syracuse all join UNC in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament field. All five teams participating in postseason play remain ranked inside the top 11 nationally (No. 1 UNC, No. 3 Duke, No. 5 Virginia, No. 10 Louisville, No. 11 Syracuse)
- Entering the NCAA Tournament as the third-overall national seed, Duke will play host to American on Friday, Nov. 10 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Duke is set to make its 19th tournament appearance and first since 2019.
- Also in Durham, North Carolina, Syracuse is set to square off with Liberty. The Orange will make their 17th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
- Making its 27th appearance in the tournament, Virginia will travel to College Park, Maryland, to clash with Big Ten runner-up Maryland. During the Big Ten Championship, the Terrapins fell to No. 2 national seed Northwestern 1-0 in a double-overtime thriller.
- Louisville will travel to Evanston, Illinois, to meet with Iowa at 3:30 p.m. EST on Friday. The Hawkeyes fell to No. 4 national seed Maryland in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament. The Cardinals will compete in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in 10 years and the 12th time in program history.
- In its second match of the season, Louisville bested then-No. 2 Northwestern on the road by a score of 1-0. Emilia Kaczmarzyk scored the lone goal off of a corner, receiving a pair of assists from Mia Duchars and Aimee Plumb.
- Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is also set to host the NCAA Field Hockey semifinals and championships, beginning on Nov. 17 at 12:00 p.m. The second semifinal game is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m. with both games streaming on ESPN+.
