Eagles Hold Off Jackets, Advance to Round 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – No. 11 seed Boston College emerged the winner in the final first-round game of the Ally Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tournament, holding off 14th-seeded Georgia Tech, 62-57, in Wednesday evening’s nightcap at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Eagles held a double-digit lead much of the night but had to weather a gallant comeback by the Yellow Jacket in the closing minutes. With Bianca Jackson scoring 11 of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, Tech charged from 13 points down with 6:17 remaining to within three with less than a minute to play before Boston College finally closed the door.

Dontavia Waggoner, returning to the lineup after missing nine games with an ankle injury, led the Eagles with 16 points. Center Maria Gakdeng added 14 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the floor, and Taina Mair pulled down 10 rebounds as BC held a massive 45-25 edge on the boards.

The Eagles (16-16) earned a spot in Thursday night’s 8 p.m. second-round game versus sixth-seeded Miami (18-11). The Hurricanes posted an 86-65 win when the teams met in late January at Coral Gables.

Jackson’s five quick points on a driving layup off a steal and 3-pointer from the top of the key on successive possessions brought Tech to within 53-50 with 3:24 remaining. It was still a three-point game at 56-53 when freshman Tonie Morgan connected on 1-of-2 free throws.

But sophomore guard Andrea Daley countered with the biggest play of the night for the Eagles, penetrating and finding Gakdeng for a layup of the glass and a five-point BC cushion with 28 seconds to play. Waggoner and Daley combined to make four three throws in the final 19 seconds to close out the victory.

Morgan added 18 points for Georgia Tech.

The win gave Boston College a season sweep over the Yellow Jackets following the Eagles’ win at Conte Forum in January. BC is now 9-15 all-time versus Georgia Tech.
