Boston College's Vetrano, Miami's Ziehl Earn ACC Baseball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College junior first baseman Joe Vetrano has been selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Miami sophomore righthander Gage Ziehl earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.

ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Vetrano hit .350 (7-for-20) out of the three-hole for the Eagles in a 4-1 week on the road that included three wins over top-10 opponents. The Shrub Oak, New York native totaled four home runs and seven RBI with a .850 slugging percentage.

Vetrano opened by going 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and three runs scored in a win at No. 2 Tennessee and then homered and drove in three runs in a 2-for-5 day at UNC Asheville. He hit his fourth home run in three games at No. 10 Virginia Tech on Friday as the Eagles wound up taking two of three in that ACC-opening series.

The Hurricanes’ Ziehl tossed a career-long eight innings in an 8-1 win against No. 19 NC State Saturday evening. Ziehl's outing marked the longest start by a Hurricane this season, and he did not yield an earned run in the series-clinching win for Miami.

After the first two NC State batters reached base, Ziehl retired 15 of the next 17 hitters he faced. The 6-foot, 216-pound hurler totaled eight-plus strikeouts for the third straight game, scattering four Wolfpack hits.
