Virginia Tech's Cannizzaro, Louisville's Liggett Earn ACC Baseball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech graduate outfielder Chris Cannizzaro has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, and Louisville sophomore right-hander Carson Liggett earned Pitcher of the Week honors. It is the first weekly honor of the season for both players.

ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Cannizzaro hit .700 (14-for-20) in the Hokies’ perfect week with wins over Radford and Charlotte. The outfielder slugged 1.250 with three doubles, a triple and two home runs, as he drove in nine runs and scored six times to pace the Virginia Tech offense. The Staten Island, New York, native’s week was headlined by a 4-for-5 performance with three RBI and a homer in the Hokies’ 6-3 victory over Charlotte on Saturday to clinch the series.

Liggett tossed a seven-inning complete game, struck out seven hitters and allowed just one hit in Louisville’s 10-0 blanking of Michigan on Sunday to seal a weekend sweep at the Shriners Children’s College Classic in Houston. The Overland Park, Kansas, native allowed just three baserunners and retired 16 of the final 17 hitters he faced.
