GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia junior third baseman Jake Gelof has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Florida State sophomore righthander Jackson Baumeister was selected as the ACC Pitcher of the Week.
ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a selected 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
Gelof hit .438 in a 4-0 week for the No. 7 Cavaliers, including 7-for-14 with a double, triple, three home runs and nine RBI in a three-game ACC series sweep of No. 20 Miami over the weekend. The Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, junior hit two home runs in Sunday’s series finale, moving him into a tie for the most career homers in UVA history (37).
Gelof drove in four of UVA's six runs on Sunday to help the Cavaliers sweep Miami for the first time since 2012.
Baumeister, making his eighth start of the season, struck out a career-high 14 batters and allowed just four hits and no runs while working seven innings in the Seminoles’ 5-1 win over Clemson on Friday night. He walked two batters.
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Baumeister struck out the side to begin the game and had at least one strikeout in each of his seven innings pitched. Along with his 14 strikeouts (the most in a single game by an ACC pitcher this season), his 7.0 innings pitched and 110 pitches were also career bests.
