SOUTH BEND, Ind. (theACC.com) – Florida State pushed past Syracuse, 4-1, in Thursday’s first quarterfinal of the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference at Melissa Cook Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. The top-seeded Seminoles move on to the semifinals and will face the winner of the No. 4 Louisville and No. 5 Virginia Tech matchup.
Senior Mack Leonard had a three-hit, three-RBI day for the Seminoles, who won their 15th straight first-round game in the ACC Championship.
The Orange took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the second inning off a Madelyn Lopez RBI-single before the Seminoles rallied for a two-run lead in the third. Senior shortstop Josie Muffley hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1.
Leonard followed that with a two-run double down the right field line to give Florida State a 3-1 advantage. She added another RBI single in the fifth inning to push the Seminoles’ lead to 4-1.
Freshman Makenna Reid earned the win in the circle for Florida State, striking out six and allowing just one run in three innings of work. She is now 12-0 on the season. ACC Pitcher of the Year Kathryn Sandercock earned her eighth save of the season.
