Virginia Claims 2023 ACC Rowing Championship

RALEIGH, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia won four of the five Grand Finals and tallied 95 total points to claim the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship Saturday morning at Lake Wheeler. It is the Cavaliers’ 13th consecutive ACC rowing title and 22nd overall in the 23 years of the regatta’s existence.

Syracuse finished second with 86 points to narrowly edge Duke, which had 83. Notre Dame was fourth with 62 points, followed by Miami (51), Clemson (41), Louisville (27), North Carolina (25) and Boston College (24).

The Cavaliers won the Third Varsity Eight (6:49.096), Second Varsity Four (7:17.998), Varsity Four (7:08.947) and Second Varsity Eight (6:34.625). Syracuse claimed the Varsity Eight with a time of 6:20.495.

Syracuse’s Luke McGee was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the first time and SU’s Ellie-Kate Hutchinson was tabbed the ACC Newcomer of the Year, becoming the first Orange student-athlete to earn the honor since 2015.

Syracuse’s First Varsity Eight garnered ACC Crew of the Year and was composed of coxswain Hannah Murphy, Annika Maxson, Alena Criss, Izabela Krakic, Kamile Kralikaite, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, India Aikens, Martyna Kazlauskaite and Emmie Frederico. It is the first time the Orange have taken home the award since 2017.

With the win, Virginia claims the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship while others will await the announcement of NCAA Selections on Tuesday, May 16 to learn if their seasons will continue. The 2023 NCAA Championship will be held May 26-28 at Camden County Boathouse in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
